Searching Basics

Locate research by using:

Pre-selected Terms IIDA has developed a list of topics relevant to the study of Interior Design. Click on the Research tab to view this list.

Own Search Terms Enter keywords that describe your research needs. Click on the Research tab to access the search box. The Knowledge Center retrieves resources that contain those terms in the title, author or abstract.

Creating Your Own Search Terms
  1. Click the Research tab.
  2. Enter a word in the Search box.
  3. Click the Search button.
    The search results include all items in the database that have your term in the title, description, author or abstract fields.

Combining Terms in a Search

You can link terms in a search. The software searches the title, description, abstract and author fields for occurrences of your term. The Knowledge Center accepts these linking terms in a search:

and   narrows your search so it has to include all search terms
or     broadens your search
not   excludes a particular term from your search.

Searching for a Phrase

To find an exact phrase, enter it into the search box without any connectors or quotation marks. For example:

shelter in place
The software searches for all occurrences of the exact phrase in the title, author, description or abstract fields.

To search for two or more phrases, enclose them in quotation marks and include a connector. For example:

"commercial design" and "design studio"
The software searches for all occurrences of both these phrases in the title, author, description or abstract fields.

Searching for an Author
  1. Enter the author's last name in the Search box.
  2. Click the search button.

Interpreting Your Search Results

When you choose a pre-selected topic, your search results are displayed in alphabetical order.

When you use your own search terms, your search results display in order of their relevance to your original search terms.

To view a more detailed record for an item, click on the item’s title. Use the Back to Search Results link to go back to your list of resources.

Sorting Your Search Results

You can sort your results in different ways using radio buttons on the search results screen.

To see your search results sorted by:

Client Type - (Corporate, Healthcare, Government, etc.) Click the Client Type radio button. Click the Search button.

Resource Type - (Book, Journal article, Website, etc.) Click the Resource Type radio button. Click the Search button.

Pre-selected topic - (Sustainability, Space Planning, Acoustics, etc) Click the Topic radio button. Click the Search button.

I Found an Article. How do I Get a Copy?

Each item has an availability icon that tells you how you can obtain a copy of the resource.

Full text. Click on Go to Website. This sends you to another website
            where you can obtain the full text of the item.

Download. Click on Download this Resource on the Results page.

Citation only. Check with your local or corporate library or contact the publisher to obtain a copy.

About the Calendar

The Knowledge Center calendar lists upcoming interior design chapter, networking and educational events. You can search for an event by date, type or location.

The calendar is updated regularly and accepts submissions by members and non-members. If you are a member, use your member logon to gain access to the calendar submission feature. Non-members, contact IIDA Headquarters to obtain a logon.

Searching for an Event on a Particular Date
  1. Click on the Calendar tab.
  2. Click on the Search by Date tab. The current month's calendar displays.
  3. To view events for a date, click on it. If a date is highlighted on the calendar, it contains events. The events for that particular date display.
  4. To learn more about an event, click on the title of the event or the arrow on the results page. Use the arrows on the calendar to move forward or backward in time.

Searching for a Chapter Event
  1. Click on the Calendar tab.
  2. Click on the Search by Type tab.
  3. Click on the Chapter dropdown list.
  4. Highlight the chapter name.
  5. Click Go.

The software displays all future events involving this chapter. Use the Event Type dropdown list to limit your search to a particular type of chapter event.

Searching for an Event in a Particular Location
  1. Click on the Calendar tab.
  2. Click on the Search by Type tab.
  3. Click on the State dropdown list.
  4. Highlight the name of the state.
  5. Click Go.

The software displays all future events involving this chapter.

Use the Event Type dropdown list to limit your search to a particular type of event in that area.

Adding a Calendar Event
  1. Log on to the Knowledge Center using your member or guest logon. Contact IIDA if you need a guest logon or have forgotten your logon.
  2. Click the Calendar tab.
  3. On the Calendar page, click Submit a New Event.
    The Submit a Calendar Event page displays.
  4. Enter the necessary information as described below.
  5. Click Submit.
    An IIDA staff member will approve the event and make available for public display.

Conference/Expo
Industry

Description
Include brief description of event

URL Link
The software automatically inserts the http:// prefix before the web address

Location

Building name

City

State

Chapter
If applicable

Information on member and non-member fees. Include information on student fees if available

Use the Calendar feature to choose dates

Name of person to contact for further information about the event

E-mail
Address for registration or further information

Phone

Contact Info
Not required. Any additional information that is available about registering

Searching for a CEU

  1. Click on the Approved CEU tab.
    A listing of IDCEC Codes displays.
  2. To view the courses indexed under a code, click on that code.
  3. To expand a particular code, click on the + sign.
    A short description of the course displays. Use the arrow buttons to move through the search results.
  4. To see a more detailed record, click on the course title.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I obtain a logon?
To search or browse you do not need to log on. If you want to submit an item, enter the same logon you use to access the IIDA website.

How do I report a problem or leave feedback?
Click on the Feedback tab. An IIDA staff person will follow up with you.

How do I obtain a copy of an "offline" publication?
Check with your corporate, university or public library. They may be able to obtain an item for you through interlibrary loan.

I have a resource I would like to include in the Knowledge Center.
Click on the Feedback tab. Include as much information about the resource as possible. The Knowledge Center librarian will contact you.
